Sutton Feast Beast 7
One of a number of good village races over the summer in Cambridgeshire is the Beast, celebrating the Sutton Feast week. Alex took a couple of very notable scalps in leading our challenge this time round.
•
Bury Friday 5
We don't have all that many heading out to Suffolk for the excellent Friday 5 series, but we still feature strongly at the sharp end. Well done this time to Ben Baldelli, third overall and first vet, and Diana, second Vet 55 at the Bury race.
•
Colworth Trail Race
Not much racing over the weekend, but there was glory at the 8.1-mile Colworth Trail Race in Bedfordshire where Ben Baldelli took third place (and first vet).
•
Kevin Henry 5K race, Thursday 2nd July
Hello all,
The second of the 5k races is a week on Thursday 2nd July, at Kedington, just outside of Haverhill.
The start is 19:30 and there is ample car parking but unfortunately there are no changing or toilet facilites.
Those who are in need of a lift, then I can I suggest meeting at the track for 6pm?
I hope we can maintain the same momentum as the first race in Saffron Walden and this time even win the female race!
There will be no training on this Thursday.
Further details of the course can be found in the read more section.
Adam
Haverhill is hilly – long steady climb for the first couple of k, then generally downhill. Country roads and through a village. The finish is near the car park through a bit of a gap in the hedge after you’ve been running through the village for at least 1k. The course is a bit of a challenge but not as tough as Saffron Walden and in pleasant surroundings.

Wilberforce Road News and C&C's Charity Status
(for anyone who didn't get Neil's e-mail)
Hello All
There are a couple of items which I need to let you know about if you use the track, both good news:
1. Building work for the floodlights is due to start any day. Some small areas will be cordoned off from time to time but should not affect our use of the track. Please be careful around these areas and treat them as you would a building site, with lots of risks to life and limb.
2. As an experiment, the University is opening the bar on Tuesday nights from 8.30-10.00. All Tuesday night users can stay late and talk/discuss injuries or anything else you like over an orange juice, or even a beer. This is something many of us have wanted for some time. if you'd like it to become permanent, please use it during the next few weeks so that the University are encouraged to continue.
Two other things to note, with more detail in the next newsletter: Firstly, the club is now a charity which will have some implications for the way we run things, all positive I think, and, secondly, Greater Cambridge has been selected as an athletics network by England Athletics with funding attached. This should mean we're able to improve facilities and coaching over the next three years for the benefit of all C&C members and other local clubs. A big thank you is due to the members who have worked hard to make these things possible.

Swaledale Marathon
We have the results from last weekend's Swaledale Marathon, run over 23 miles of rough terrain and 1258m of ascent and in sweltering temperatures. First home for C&C were Adam and Mandy, but hats off to the whole team for conquering the course.
•
Derbyshire Pics
I've just spotted Dave Y's excellent Derbyshire pics in the gallery. Thanks, Dave!
•
Ramsey Abbey 10K
Full results are in from the Ramsey Abbey 10K, and it was a brilliant day for C&C. We took five of the top nine places - Mike Salt (third place in 35:12), Noel Carroll (fourth in 35:27), Alessandro Coianiz (sixth in 36:13), Bob Watson (seventh and first V45 in 36:18) and Alan Pritchard (ninth in 36:30). Congratulations to them. It seems we have a formidable 'first-team' squad coming together.

•
Stowmarket Friday 5 and St Albans Half
The third in the Friday Five series, at Stowmarket saw good runs from Dave A, Paul D and Diana, but Diana took the main honours with a fine victory in her category, and followed that up with a third in category at the St Albans Half on Sunday.
•
Tri Club 5K Series
Thursday's last race in the Tri Club 5K at Impington was the last in the three-race series, and our top finishers were Chris F and George S. George's placing confirmed her as second female overall. Good going George and everyone else.
•
Round Norfolk Relay
Once again C & C has entered a male team for the Round Norfolk Relay, 24 hours over the weekend Saturday 19th - Sunday 20th September. There are 17 legs ranging from distances between 5.39 miles to 19.67 miles. If anyone is interested in running and/or supporting during this relay, please can you contact Adam brassik@talk21.com or Tim Long timlong2@yahoo.co.uk?
Further details including the route, change over points and distances can be found on www.roundnorfolkrelay.com
Thank you.

Thursday Training at Wandlebury
Just a quick reminder that Alan and James will be taking their Thursday road session from Wandlebury for three weeks starting tonight at 6.30pm. Plans are afoot for another 'away' series, at Milton Country Park, after that. Wilberforce Road is still available for an unstructured (probably) run.
•
Saffron Walden 5K and Grand Prix Update
The results are in, but have a lot of holes in them. I'm trying to piece everything together, but if you have any information or corrections (times, people, names etc!) not listed, please let me know. However, we do now have enough information to publish the latest Grand Prix standings. The overall rankings have Jemma top with two wins from two and 40 points, with Emma close behind on 38 (I'm trying to come up with a workable "Jemma/Emma/Nemesis" headline). First chap is Tom, on 31. Age/sex-graded standings are complicated by the lack of several times for Saffron Walden, but Simon Bowen, last year's champ, is well on course to confirm his status as best pound-for-pound (or something) C&C runner.
Next Grand Prix race is the St Ives 10K on 19th July.

Dartmoor Discovery and Other Hills
Well done Simon R ('Ultra Simon'?) on his 5:15 at the notoriously hilly 32-mile Dartmoor Discovery Ultra. Possibly not the nicest weekend for it! Still on a hilly theme, Deb C conquered the Tilty Hilly 5 just across the Essex border. Well done both, and anyone else who bravely took a drenching.
•
Kirton Friday Fives
Heading east once again, Diana and Paul maintained their challenges for the Friday Five series honours by finishing second and third respectively in their categories at Kirton.

5K League Results
What a superb evening for C&C at the Saffron Walden race last night, with easily the strongest team we've put out in recent years. Individual results to follow when available, but our top placings went to Mike Salt, third, and Jemma Clarry, second, and (from memory) we had seven of the top twelve men and five of the top twelve women. Our men's team finished clear winners, but the impressive Saffron Walden women's team edged our girls into second place. All to play for in the remaining three races - next is the Haverhill event at Kedington on 2nd July.
James's photos of the race are available in the Gallery.
Well done everyone!

New Archive
We have a new archive section which now includes some back issues of the club newsletter - many thanks to Noel for his work on that, and particularly for writing them in the first place!
•
Friday Fives
The Friday Five series got under way last, er, Friday, at Ipswich, and Paul and Diana excelled by taking second place in their respective categories. Next on to Kirton, Stowmarket, Bury St Eds and Great Bentley.
•
Harlow RC Ladies 5K - race 3
Fifth place this time for Ultra Katie to end the series at Harlow.
•
Cambridge 10K Series
Latest news from the Sweatshop Cambridge 10K Series on a sweltering May day. Top performances amongst our squad of five came from Jemma C, who took first place in the women's race in 42:53, and Simon B, who was eighth overall in 41:15.
•
Cambridge Tri Club 5K Series - Race 2
The second race in the Tri Club 5K Series was held last night at Impington - top billing to Dave P (fourth) and George S (second female), and a good set of results all round.
•
Kevin Henry 5k league
Further to the announcement at last night's training, the first of the Kevin Henry 5k races, is next Thursday 4th June in Saffron Walden starting at 19.30. If you are in need of a lift, please be at the athletics club for 6pm. It's free entry, so just turn up with your club vest and run!
The start is in the main carpark at the bottom of the hill as you come in to Saffron Walden from Cambridge.
•
Two fast 10Ks and an Off-Road Half
Three quick 10K times to report from our elite boys. John F and Alan ran 37:20 and 38:47 at the Hatfield Broad Oak 10K but were outgunned by Noel C's 34:44 for 28th place in a high-class international field at the London 10,000. Superb, all.
Meanwhile, over the ups, downs, ins and outs of the Brandon Forest Half, Kim was fourth female and, like Diana, also second in her category.

Tour of the Derwent Valley 2009
It's all over for another year, and those hills have been conquered again. Full results have been posted from the races at Duffield, Wirksworth, Milford and Rowsley. We were down on the usual complement, partly because of a spate of injuries, but four managed the whole lot to earn the famous(?) T-shirt - see the Rowsley results for overall placings - and the ten others managed up to three of them, physical condition and/or logistics permitting! On the men's side, Glyn took the main honours, finishing highest C&C on the overall rankings and first Vet 60, taking a first-C&C at Duffield on the way. Adam (at Milford and Rowsley) and John K (at Wirksworth) led us in at the other races. Women's champ was Carmel, first C&C female over the monster hill at Rowsley, whilst first-timer Amy starred at Wirksworth and Milford. Rachel was the first of our girls home at Duffield (never mind the black vest!), deserved reward for her epic organisation efforts - many thanks, Rachel. A cracking weekend with superb weather.
There is a high likelihood of photos, which will appear at this link (photographers - contact me if you'd like help with uploading).

Katie's Marathon Double
Just when we thought Ultra Katie had switched focus to the short stuff, news in of her 3:36 at the White Peak Marathon in Derbyshire, followed the next day by a 3:53 at the Windermere Marathon up in the Lakes. Crikey!
•
Oxford Town and Gown 10K
Another classy run by Noel C in Sunday's Town and Gown 10K in Oxford, finishing eleventh of 2600-plus with 34:33.
•
East Cambs (Soham) Half
Results have arrived from the East Cambs Half, where a bunch of us got rained on, sun-tanned, blown about and generally had fun as you can see from TJ's photos. Karin was second female and Jalanie fourth (and first V35) - congratulations!
•
Tri Club 5K
Results are in from Thursday evening's 5K at Impington. First female was George S whilst Alan P headed our challenge in the men's race with fourth place.
•
Elsewhere...
Elsewhere, there was a successful triathlon debut for Phil A at Stratford-upon-Avon. Also in, limited news the Sawston Fun Run, where it was a double victory for C&C's younger stars Will Mycroft and George Schwiening. Andrea won her category, whilst Alex was second in his. Well done all. Finally, Phil S turned in a handy 1:44 at the Hinckley Half.
•
Halstead & Essex Marathon and Ultra
The Halstead Marathon always brings out the sun to roast the competitors, but it didn't deter Giacomo, Kim, Joe and Simon R. Particularly congratulations to Kim, who took second place in 3:10, but the rest all starred too. Well done to rehabbing Giacomo for a 3:09, to Joe for exorcising his 4-hour jinx and to Simon for his characteristic refusal to see 26.2 miles as 'enough' (he ran the 30-mile Ultra option - see Ultra pics).

Eye 10K
A very good, sunny morning for C&C at the Eye 10K, where a squad of seventeen wore the famous vest. We picked up third place in both the men's and women's events, thanks to Noel C (34:49) and Jemma Clarry (41:23), and recorded a range of impressive times (along with some valiant struggles) including top-tens from Alan and Emma. Simon B won the V55 category, Glyn was third in the next one up and Diana was second female V55 - congratulations to them. Our female team was pipped for first place by just one point, and our male team were joint second. Very impressive, everyone. There are some pics up from our support & coaching crew, Caz and James (thanks both).
This was the first race in the 2009 Grand Prix Series - as last year, it's the best four performances from nine races that count, and we all have Noel and Jemma to chase, plus defending age/gender adjusted champ Simon, at the first 5K League fixture at Saffron Walden on the 4th of June.
•
Cambridge Tri Club 5K Series

Bank Holiday Racing
There's more info yet to come in, but we have news from a couple of far-flung races. Well done Matt W on a rapid 38:13 at the Langtoft 10K. Well done too to Al, Caz and the fastest bump in the Midlands at the Coventry Godiva Harriers May Day 5, Al taking 15th in 28:36 and Caz bowing out for a while with a 39:12. Also on Monday, Giulio led our challenge at the Ashdon 10K+, while Seth Kennard was second in the 3K (I'd appreciate help with identifying other junior C&Cs in that race).
•
Grand East Anglian 10K
We certainly had the first team out for the Grand East Anglian 10K on Saturday. Out of 1500 finishers in this EA East Grand Prix race, we took sixth (Mike Salt), seventh (Noel C), ninth (Geoff) and eleventh (Ben B). Unsurprisingly, those four took the men's team prize. Phenomenal running, chaps. There were also some strong performances lower down, including Karine's nineteenth in the women's race. Grand to see.
