Doing/done the GNR?
If so, Caz would appreciate some advice on accommodation this year - see forum.
[Andy I, Tue 09/03/10]

MK Half
Well done Simon Bowen at the MK Half - second V55 (and 202nd overall) in a very big field, clocking 1:28. Not too far behind was Tim Chew, with a C&C-debut 1:34.

BRJ Results
To update Adam's message, the (corrected) results from the BRJ race are now up. We dominated the top ten, which is great to see. Martin Reid, Mike Salt and Noel Carroll finished second, third and fourth respectively, with Ben Baldelli and Diarmuid Ó Séaghdha in sight of them in ninth and tenth. Also in the top 20 were Alan Pritchard (16th) and John Oakes (20th). John's 87.18% WAVA grading was the highest ever recorded ('ever' meaning since this site's records began in 2006), pipping his 87.00% at Great Bentley Half last month. Worth a moment's applause as you sit at your PC, I feel.
The female team was, as too often, short-staffed, but the bare-minimum of three we had were lightning around the streets of Huntingdon so we got away with it. Thanks and well done to Jemma Clarry (tenth female), Kim Masson (12th) and Caz Pritchard (13th).
It's been a cracking season, and second place is our best ever, so well done to everyone who made it to BRJ or any of the other five races this season. You're all heroes.

The Junior team once again did us proud, and were once again competitive with the very best. Hollie Parker led us in, seventh overall and first girl, with Thomas Heylan (11th), Lucy Parker (13th/third girl), Charlotte Murphy (14th/fourth) and Claire Wilson (17th/fifth) packing the top 20. Great running once again by Lauren Murphy, Alex Stone and Maisie Cassidy. All of those runners have turned out again and again for the club in all weather, and I think they'll be challenging for the top honours next season.
[Andy I, Mon 08/03/10]

Wymondham 20, Thanet 20 and Further Still
To deepest, sunny but chilly Norfolk for the Wymondham 20. Well done to Antonio Ciruela, Meinou Simmons, Carmel McEniery and Deb Carter, continuing the long-distance season with a set of handy performances.
Meanwhile, in Kent, in-form Katie Toynton turned in a 2:33 at the Thanet 20. Continuing a bit beyond Kent, Mandy, Tim, Dave and Rachel took on the Paris Half, and performed with distinction. Finally, our international sources report a 4:07 from globetrotting Mike DiFranco at the Barcelona Marathon.

Frostbite League - BRJ
from Adam
As the 2009/10 Frostbite season is now over, I'd like to say a HUGE thank you to all the runners who participated and made it such a successful season. Today's performance and turn for both the junior and senior races was simply outstanding.
The results are are as follows -
Juniors - today we finished 5th and came 4th overall. Riverside Runners won the junior series and a special well done goes to Hollie Parker who won C & C junior runner of the season.
Seniors - (we had no less than 7 runners in the top 20, including 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th, 16th, and 20th). Today we finished second just (no surprise here) behind NVH and overall remain in second place with 95 points, while NVH have 100. It has been an excellent season because we have consistently maintained the same positions throughout, so well done to absolutely everyone who ran. It clearly gives us a good focus for the 2010/11 season and I hope we can improve on it.
The senior runner of the series has yet to be announced so watch this space!
And finally, I have spot prizes for the following people, which I would like to get to you as soon as possible -
Juniors - Thomas Heyden
Seniors - John Morley, Ben Baldelli, Simon Redfern, Paul O'Brien, and Leon Stone
Thank you once again.
Adam

Dunmow Duathlon
Congratulations Ben Baldelli - winner of the Dunmow Duathlon! Not a bad start to the multi-event season.

Runners' Sports Yoga Session
I would like to set up a regular Wednesday sports yoga session. However, I'm planning to trail it first to see if it proves to be popular and successful. I have therefore got a trail date in mind on Wednesday 24th March from 19:15 - 20:30 and the cost is £6 per person. I am afraid that due to space, there are only 12 spaces available and it's on a first come, first served basis. So, if you are interested, please can you let me know and pay the £6 in advance by 5pm Wednesday 17th March?
The venue is in the centre of Cambridge and there's car parking in Park Street car park or on Jesus Lane.

Cambridge parkrun
The last parkrun of February was the first that I have actually run, and I have to say I thought it was a fantastic course (I may be biased). I've written up a report at the race page.

This Saturday's parkrun saw Jonathan Escalante-Phillips PB once more (taking more than 2 minutes off his first parkrun time, from just one month ago) and come in third, and first junior. It was great to see Alessandro coming back again from injury, with Chris B, Andrew H, ultra-Katie, and the Downie double making fantastic runs on an unusally dry and frost-less morning.

Frostbite League - BRJ
There's one last chance of Frostbite glory for C&C at the BRJ fixture in Huntingdon this coming Sunday (7th). We're in second place coming into the last race, a few points behind Nene Valley and a few ahead of Werrington; it would take a bad day for NVH for us to have the chance of our first championship, but let's make sure we take the opportunity if it arises.
The race is at the BRJ Club on Sallowbush Road, Huntingdon, PE29 7LA. 11am start for Seniors, 10:15 for Juniors, no entry fee, no registering, just turn up in your club vest and run.
There will be a meet-up at 9am at Wilberforce Road for lift-sharing - please everyone try to make it - it could be our date with destiny, but we need as many C&C vests as possible!
[Andy I, Wed 03/03/10]

English Cross-Country Championship
Well done to everyone who competed at Roundhay Park in the English Nationals XC (Results). If the toughness of a course can be measured by the number of young competitors crying at the end of a race, this wins for sure. The Nationals are just that, the best of the best, the competition was fierce. Great performances from the entire C&C squad. James Cochrane (45th), Hollie Parker (218th), Charlotte Murphy (129th), Nathlie Richards (69th), Mary Holmes (518th), Diana Braverman (309th), Thomas Heylan (117th), John Baslington (108th), Gerald Meah (1343rd), Will Clarke (23rd), George Schwiening (18th). Anyone who managed to run up that slope, even once at the end of a race, deserves a medal - or at least a large packet of Cadbury's mini-eggs! John Moores photos here. More below.

Syndiah's Trans-Manche Adventure
Another C&C member doing something extreme for a good cause is Syndiah Culit, who is cycling from London to Paris this September in aid of prostate cancer research. You can read about the challenge at http://www.mycharitypage.com/Syndiah and sponsor her there too. I really hope there's a ferry involved for the middle bit!

Caz and Al's London Marathon for the NSPCC
Caz and Al Pritchard make their marathon debuts in (appropriately) the Virgin London Marathon in April, and they're marking the occasion by raising money for the NSPCC's work helping kids at risk of abuse. If you can spare some money for this excellent cause, please visit their fundraising page at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/gocazandal. Go Caz and Al!

Great Larks at the Great East Run
How do you like your horizontal sleet? On your back? Or in your face? Me too.
It was particularly miserable around the country lanes of Bungay for the Adnams Great East Run 20K and 10K, but whilst core temperatures plummeted (there was documented post-race cuddling beneath silver foil), determination increased, and we even came away with a couple of prizes. Star performer of the day was the ever-quicker John Oakes, whose run in the 10K was not just worth his usual first MV50, but also second place overall. Congratulations, John! Congratulations too to in-form Carmel McEniery for her third place in the V35s over the 20K distance. And *cough* I was first C&C home in the 20K, so well done me too. :-)
Read Alex's report here.

[Adam Poole, Mon 15/02/10]

Ryston Runners Cross-Country
Well done the C&C girls at the latest Ryston meeting. Our all-female junior team dominated proceedings at Shouldham Warren, with top-three positions going to Lucy Parker (first U11) and to Hollie Parker, Amy Pettitt and Charlotte Murphy, who took 1-2-3 respectively in the U13s. Good effort by the whole squad, including those either not female or not junior!
[Andy I, Mon 15/02/10]

Stamford St Valentine's 30K
A bit too chilly and damp for romance, so seven C&C boys and seven C&C girls kept warm by taking on 30K's-worth of the endless hills of Stamford. Andrew Shields and Simon Brightwell were quickest, and although they finished together we think it was strictly platonic. Excellent runs all down the field; many were training for marathon season, though first female C&C Ultra Katie's 2:21 was just quick anyway.
[Andy I, Mon 15/02/10]

Cambridge parkrun through a blizzard
The snow came down as the finishers came through in today's parkrun at Milton. A thrilling neck to neck finish saw Tom Vickery (Cambridge Tri) take the honours from Ben B at the line, but C&C filled the field once more with excellent running and much fun!
[Simon, Sat 13/02/10]

Coe Fen Relay, Boundary Run and The Roman Road Race
Cambridge University Hare and Hounds will be hosting the Coe Fen Relays on Sunday 14th February. Further details can be found through this website - http://www.cuhh.org.uk/registration/
The male relay requires 4 runners whereas the female relay requires 3 runners. Both races start at 2pm with registration at 1.15pm. There is the possibility of joining with other runners, should C & C not have enough. However, this will not be known until the actual day. If anyone does run, good luck.
Two other Hare and Hounds events worth doing are the Boundary Run (Sunday 7/3) and the Roman Road Race (Saturday 13/3).

Anglian Schools Cross Country
I have posted some of the results from the Anglian Schools Cross Country - I have pulled out names I recognize, maybe someone else could look through and pull out the rest?
The day was misty and cold (again!). Hinchingbrooke was suitably wet and muddy - almost the perfect set-up for a cross country event. It was a team event with the best runners from Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Suffolk and Norfolk competing against each other. It was a very strong field of runners, taking from a large portion of the East of England. We had lots of very high quality performances amongst our athletes. John Moores from NVH took an excellent set of pictures.

Bourne Frostbite Pics
Marcus's excellent pics from the Frostbite at Bourne are now up in the Gallery. Enjoy!
[Andy I, Mon 08/02/10]

Frostbite League - Bourne
Well done everyone who made the long trip to Bourne for the fifth Frostbite, one which was even muckier than last year's mudbath. I think the turnout was impressive in the circumstances. The juniors were excellent again, finishing fifth on the day but unluckily slipping a place to fifth overall. In the seniors, well, I don't think any club could have beaten the awesomely strong Nene Valley Harriers squad today, and we didn't, but third place on the day consolidates our second place overall, and we still have an outside chance of taking the title next month at BRJ. Well done Werrington for an impressive (and annoying) second place today.
Individually we had some outstanding performances, and Steve Watterson's first place is well worth celebrating. Not far behind, Mike Salt took third place and Noel Carroll made it three C&Cs in the first four, easily the best set of results at the sharp end I can remember. Congratulations, chaps. Alan Pritchard (17th) and John Ferguson (22nd) also featured prominently. First C&C female was Jemma Clarry, 16th-placed female.
In the junior event, Hollie Parker was in fine form again, replicating her result from Ramsey and finishing ninth overall and second girl. Matt Rogen was close behind in 16th, just ahead of a fine battle between Lucy Parker and Charlotte Murphy for 18th. Follow the link for full results.
[Andy I, Sun 07/02/10]

Great Bentley Half
Half marathon news from Essex - top running by John Oakes (1:18 and second Vet 50), David Edwards (a PB in 1:27) and Diana Braverman (1:42 and second Vet 55) at Great Bentley. Good going!
[Andy I, Sun 07/02/10]

Cambridge parkrun
Another good showing at the Cambridge parkrun in Milton today, with three C&C runners in the top five finishers, Jonathan Escalante-Phillips running the fastest junior time, and Johanna Jones coming in as first lady.
[Simon, Sat 06/02/10]

Frostbite Call-to-Arms
An important message from Alan, James and Adam - click here!
Don't forget - there's an 8.45 meet on Sunday at Wilberforce Road for sharing lifts. Let's see a big C&C turnout.
[Andy I, Sun 24/01/10]

SEAA Cross-Country Championships
Results are up (thanks, Christof!) from the SEAA Championships at Parliament Hill. This is a seriously high-class event, but despite that we had a fair few prominent finishers amongst our strong squad. Here's Christof's report...

The day started bright and cold, with plenty of car drivers who could have done with spikes on their tyres. By the start of the first race Parliament Hill had warmed-up just enough to turn the puddles of ice to a rather nice, slippy cold paste. There were some excellent performances on what is one of the toughest of cross country courses. Will Clarke got a respectable 11th place, George 12th and James Cochrane and Nathalie Richards came in 24th and 27th place respectively. Frankly, on that course, anyone who finished was a winner. Great event with some of the toughest competition in England.
[Andy I, Tue 02/02/10]

First Parkrun in Cambridge
Well done to all who turned out (especially the Marshalls and Organisers!!!) at 0900 on a Sat with unexpected Snow on the ground, for the first Parkrun in Cambridge (http://www.parkrun.org.uk/cambridge) in Milton Country Park. I live so near the Country Park - how could I not turn up!? My conscience would not let me. My running is pretty poor at the moment but I was re-invigorated by the event. Katie SD took first place for the women (this is the third time she took 1st in the Parkrun events). C&C were well-represented in all capacities. I definitely recommend this event. Results are online pretty quickly. But you do need to print off a barcode to register and participate.
[Mary J, Sun 31/01/10]

Suffolk Winter League
A very handy ninth place, and first in category, for John Oakes at Bury St Eds (not for C&C, sadly!). Nice one, John.
[Andy I, Tue 26/01/10]

Paul Evans session
This has now been rescheduled for Thursday 11th February, 6.30, at the track. There's a link to a poster giving more details on the main C&C site - if you would like to attend, you need to register with June Swift, the Greater Cambridge Network Activator: jvswift87@yahoo.co.uk or 07772 427338

An invitation from CUHH
CUHH is the Cambridge University endurance running club and they have invited us to join their events. Andy has put the events on the fixture list - is anyone able to get teams out? The invitation is from their captain, Robin Brown, and he has asked us to pre-enter at www.cuhh.org.uk/registration.

Sunday 14th February: Coe Fen Relays (Fen Causeway). 2pm start for the first of our relay races - 4 x 3km for the men and 3 x 3km for the ladies. The course goes out to Trumpington Street and back to Fen Causeway across the park.

Sunday 21st February: Selwyn Relays (Wilberforce Rd). 2pm start for the finale of our College league - 4 x 4km for the men and 3 x 4km for the ladies. This course goes out of the track around Wilberforce Rd, Madingley Rd, Physics department and returns along the cycle path before re-entering the sports ground for a lap of the jogging trail.

Pre-entry for both of the relays will be available online and hopefully we can have options for your clubs included in the registration form. We'll welcome any more competitors to these races and they're all usually quite fun, light hearted fixtures. We also organise a marathon and half marathon around Cambridge (the Cambridge Boundary Run) which will be on March 7th this year – details on http://www.cuhh.org.uk/competition/boundaryrun/
[Neil Costello, Mon 25/01/10]

Folksworth 15
Well done to our team at the 21st anniversary of the always-excellent Folksworth 15. Chris Pyle led us in in 1:37 for 24th place, and Caz Pritchard (1:51), Katie Toynton (1:49) and Meinou Simmons (1:51) successfully defended our female team title.
Al's photos are now up in the gallery.

Cambridge Winter Beer Festival
A few of us dedicated drinkers are taking a break from training to attend the Cambridge Winter Beer Festival at the University Social Club in Mill Lane tonight from approx. 5.30pm onwards (admission £2.50). All welcome to come along and enjoy the beer!

Frostbite League - Ramsey
Well, the wind held off this year, but the mud was extra-filthy for this year's Ramsey Frostbite. A brave band of C&C runners kept our title challenge going, and though Nene Valley pipped us by one place, we're just two points behind going into the last two fixtures.
Things started excellently thanks to a fine fourth place by our junior team, which took them to fourth overall, ahead of the strong Bourne squad. Hollie Parker and Claire Wilson starred, finishing second and third girls, with Thomas Heylan in between, eighth boy.
In the senior race, Katie Toynton's glorious form continued, and she finished third female. Alessandro Coianiz is also flying, taking ninth place. Miguel Branco and Alan Pritchard also featured in the top 20, whilst just outside it a trio of Johns finished in sequence; 22nd, 23rd and 24th. Good packing at the sharp end earned us third place on the day, and though we're likely to need to beat Nene Valley twice, we've put a nice gap between us and third-placed Fenland.
Superb. Well done (and thanks) to all.
Photos are up, more to come.
[Andy I, Mon 18/01/10]

Wellingborough Series
Congratulations to the unstoppable George Schwiening for taking yet another win, this time over a multi-terrain 5K in the Wellingborough race series.
[Andy I, Mon 18/01/10]

Ryston Runners XC
'On the country', our team contested the latest in the monthly Ryston Series, just over the Norfolk border. As ever, plenty of good performances were recorded, and particular noteworthy were our top-three finishers James Cochrane (first U15), Mary Holmes (second V55), Alice Newcombe (third U11) and Nathalie Richards (third senior).
[Andy I, Mon 18/01/10]

Rollicking Good Fun
Maria and Simon Brightwell ventured to the Southwest to revel in the messiness of the Thornbury Running Club Riverbank Rollick. With an 8.7 mile course alongside the River Severn featuring varying depths of mud broken only by deep pools of cowmuck and the occasional stream Simon finished 36th in 1:06 and Maria a more leisurely 192nd in 1:31 of 258 finishers.
[Andy I, Mon 18/01/10]

Frostbite, Sunday 17th January, Ramsey
The next Frostbite is on Sunday 17th January in Ramsey (details can be found on the following website - www.frostbiteleague.org.uk). The junior race starts at 10:15am and the senior race starts at 11am. Please note the two different courses for the 2 races, which can be found through the above website.

We're meeting at the track at 9am and if anyone can offer lifts, that would be really helpful. I hope we can maintain our previous outstanding performance in December.
Thank you and see you next Sunday. The following race is in Bourne, Lincolnshire on Sunday 7th February.

Cambridgeshire Cross-Country Championships
Another impressive set of results at the County Championships at a snowy Priory Park, and the junior results in particular were stunning. Individually, our new County Champions are Thomas Heylan (U13), George Schwiening (U15), James Cochrane (U15), Kim Masson (V45) and Diana Braverman (V55) - many congratulations to them. We also had no fewer than thirteen top-three finishers - well done to them too. One particularly good race for C&C was the under-15 girls, where we swept the medals and took fifth too. Full team results will follow when published, and Carmel's pics are up in the gallery. Finally, many thanks to all of the C&Cs and others involved in running the event for Cambs AA - hope you've thawed successfully.

Cambridge Parkrun
From Simon Redfern:
Cambridge parkrun is a new FREE weekly 5km event for runners of all standards, which will take place every Saturday at 9am in Milton Country Park, starting on 30th January.

Details are here: http://www.parkrun.org.uk/cambridge/
It is not a race against other runners, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan.

It offers an opportunity for all the local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful park and get physically active into the bargain. We want to encourage people to jog or run together irrespective of their ability - this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE!

Taking part is easy - just register in advance by 6pm on the Friday before your first ever parkrun here. The great thing is that you only ever need to do this once. Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning and get yourself there.

After the run, if you don't have to get off straight away, there will be the chance to socialise with everyone at the Milton Country Park Café to maybe swap stories about your run that day, chat to other runners over a cup of tea or coffee and just be an important part of this new running community.

So whether you are a complete novice looking to get yourself started on your own "running journey" or a seasoned athlete wanting to use this as a part of your training schedule, you’re welcome to come along and join us.
[Andy I, Fri 08/01/10]

Sunday League - Royston
Quite a few C&Cs took advantage of an unusually amenable fixture list and raced for the club in our cross-country Sunday League fixture at Royston. Noel Carrol and Mike Salt (fourth and fifth) were right up at the sharp end, and John Oakes and Alex Downie took third place in their categories. Diana Braverman led (and in fact was) our female team, again finishing first in her age group. We even beat several other teams - very encouraging! Good going, everyone.
[Andy I, Tue 05/01/10]

Ely New Year's Eve 10K
The New Year was seen out in traditional style at Ely, where C&Cs turned out in huge numbers. Despite some forecasts, it was a pretty good day for running, and it certainly suited Will Clarke (unfortunately representing the Tri Club, but we know he's C&C!), who won in 30:05 to break the course record. We had first-claim glory too, in the form of Bob Watson (17th in 35:48) and John Oakes (22nd in 36:25), who rounded off their outstanding racing year by respectively winning the Vet 45 and 50 categories. Congratulations to both. First C&C female was Katie Toynton, a superb eighth place in 41:49. Also top-3 in their categories were Alessandro Coianiz (second MV40 and 12th overall), Simon Brightwell (third MV45) and Alex Downie (third MV60). Alan Pritchard (16th), Katie Samuelson-Dean (12th) and Alejandra Pascual Garrido (17th) also managed top-twenty finishes. All in all, the Christmas pud wreaked very little devastation on our form, and all kinds of good times were recorded. Full results now up, Madhuri's photos are also up in the gallery.
[Andy I, Thu 31/12/09]

Buntingford Results
To update Meinou's report, the results are up and in addition to Steve Watterson's second place, Victoria Knight was first female. Magnificent!
[Andy I, Wed 30/12/09]

Will's Boxing Day Record
Will Clarke took six seconds off the course record for the C&C Boxing Day 4-mile race, winning spectacularly in 18:32, beating Greville Tuck's record from the 1970s. Congratulations, Will. Congratulations too to Nathalie Richards for taking the women's race in 27:14. Both Will and Nathalie were defending their titles from last year. Full results now up, and Madhuri's photos are now online too in the Gallery.
[Andy I, Mon 28/12/09]

Buntingford 10
This was a fine 'undulating' race (in Amy's words) on a very cold day. Most of it is on country roads through scenic villages, with signposts to other curious village names (including 'Nasty'). There are a few higgledy piggledy bits around a housing estate at the start and end. It was well marshalled. It may even be worth doing for the race momento: which was a silver/golden mini engraved trainer! Stephen Watterson came 2nd which was great. It seems Victoria Knight, Simon Bowen and Meinou Simmons were the only other C and C runners. I recommend it as a good way to burn off the excess Christmas calories!

C&C Boxing Day Race
In between bouts of over-consumption this Christmas, don't forget the time-honoured (and free) C&C Boxing Day Race, which leaves Fen Causeway for a four-mile round trip to Trumpington at 11 a.m. sharp. Bring your family and friends.

Christmas Party
We had another excellent Christmas party at Jesus College last night - thanks once again to Chris Brown for his sterling efforts in organising it. Well worth battling through snow and ice for. The, er, 'lucky', um, 'winners' of a London Marathon club place were Hazel Turton, Carmel McEniery, Alan Pritchard and Andrew Marshall. Well done to them.
